Holstein Calf Recumbency (Muscle Weakness Syndrome)

In April 2023, a lethal haplotype was identified in holstein calves and can now be verified through genomic testing.

Although we do not sell bulls with this recessive trait due to the values we hold regarding our contribution to maintain animal health in the industry as a whole, we believe everyone should be properly informed regarding the details and scientific research on such a gene.

Please follow the links to the articles below detailing the effects this gene has on the Holstein breed and steps to properly manage it.

UPDATE: December 5, 2023

The December 2023 genetic evaluations now include specific identification abbreviations for varying haplotypes visible on a bull’s genetic summary.
